She's coming up on celebrating her 100th-lesson milestone, starting out on ukulele for a little over a year. Then moving to guitar last November.
She looks forward to every lesson and loves playing. Her lessons started with a solid foundation from a structured sequence of ukulele lessons. For the past year her lesson songs have been her own selections. Her teacher's belief is that if she gets to choose her lesson songs, she'll be more motivated to practice than if she's told what she has to play.
On the fly her guitar teacher incorporates music theory and guitar technique based on her song choices. It may come as no surprise that many of the songs she chooses are by Taylor Swift. A blues song occasionally gets in the mix and more traditional country tunes - especially from the '90s - are frequent picks, too.
Her guitar teacher is Ben Christopher of Perry, IA. He offers lessons (on bass and drums, too, plus repair and retail of all sorts of music-related items) at BRG Music in Perry. This photo is from one of her first lessons around two years ago.
To fit the vibe of her session, we thought it would be cool to add some vivid color. On the background and floor we used an LED light that can be dialed to be pretty much any color and any level of saturation. The colors we used were her choices except for the violet. All of these are using the same grey background and concrete floor as a starting point.
While I photographed she sang and sang and played and played to her playlist blaring in the background. Her photography session wasn't supposed to be about me. But she made me FEEL like it was.
