The stars aligned and we had exactly the kind of snow session hoped for! While a snowy session sounds great, sometimes it can be hard to pull off. Snow that is falling too heavily can make a camera focus on a big blobby snowflake in front of the subject instead of on his/her face. Not to mention that heavy snow can make facial features almost indiscernible. Snow that has just fallen can be accompanied by conditions making it dangerous to get to a session, let alone fall on ice during. Snow that's been on the ground a while can get icky-dirty and/or sloppy. And, sometimes the snow is awesome but it is just too cold outside to avoid frostbite, or too cold making the camera freeze up (literally) ... like this past winter, which anyone who lives in Iowa already knows!
I've included more images than I normally do in a blog post, but they are just so fun!!! Clicking on the smaller images will allow you to see details better.
Our day was PERFECT! It was in February. Just a light snow but there was already a lot of snow on the ground. We stepped outside to start photographing right as my husband had snow blown a single path on our driveway. "Wait, wait, wait, WAIT!!!!" I hollered and waved to him, asking him to stop. He was so sweet to wait until the session was over to move the rest of the snow. That path was perfect for many of these images.
Julia has such delicate yet striking photogenic features, she's so unassuming, she's fun, and her movements are so subtle, fluid and natural. Put that together with a light snow during part of the session and you get all of these amazing images.
I've paired several of the images so you can see what a different look Julia has with just a subtle change of her position or expression.
I usually try to get a few quick photographs of the senior with whatever family members are along for the session. As was the case for this session, family members are usually pretty shy about being photographed. I don't make them be included, but I assure them that I won't let anyone else see the images without their permission. Pets, on the other hand, seem to love being photographed! : )
Thank you to my sister and her husband for giving to me this red chair. (If you have an amazing chair that needs a good home, please let me know!) Also, I had just purchased the wood/leather stool from Wenger Auction Service in Perry, Iowa. On Facebook you'll find them if you search on "Wenger Auction Service." They have an expansive selection of antiques in their store on 1st Street in Perry. It's the perfect kind of antique store that you can get lost in (if not literally, then at least by looking through everything) and has decent prices.
