I was recently asked about photographing a senior in downtown Des Moines. I responded by saying I would provide some sample images from a Class of '21 session. So, here they are!
In addition to Evelyn's photos taken in downtown Des Moines, I've included some images from Evelyn's fall leaves session as well as some from her studio session. Scroll for some explanation. Clicking on any image enlarges it.
At the end of this post is a photo taken on graduation day. It is a wall arrangement of most of the Evelyn's and her family's favorites.
Enjoy!
This lighting was not easy in these two night-time images. Evelyn's mom and sister held strobe lights for these images. The image immediately below on the right was used on Evelyn's graduation cards. The image on the left ... well ... let's just say we had to move quickly multiple times to get that photo of Evelyn in the middle of the street!
The fur stole is from my (very small) style closet. The red bracelet and earrings were mine. I brought all three items to the session "just in case." (I bring extra items along for almost every session.) I timidly told Evelyn that I had something in my car that I wondered if she might be willing to wear. When I pulled out the stole her eyes lit up. In these images the stole was SO HER!!!!!
These next three images are together in a 12x24" collage. It was kind of funny how these different-color images evolved. I had just purchased an LED wand light that can be set to one color, or set to automatically cycle through a variety of colors. I couldn't remember how to keep it set on one color so we just let it run through a series of colors. We liked all three images individually, but the chemistry of the expressions and colors together made us love them even more.
For the yearbook, Evelyn selected the image immediately below on the right.
The fall leaves session was intentionally super short. One image was wanted for the resulting wall arrangement. At first the red chair image on the left was selected. Then the following day Evelyn's mom asked to switch to the image on the right. We all loved them both.
When we scheduled this studio session, we knew the two main goals of the session were to photograph Evelyn with her dog, and to also end up with one prom-dress image.
This next photo was taken on graduation day and is Evelyn with her mom. One of the many services I offer is using specialized software to help clients visualize prints on their walls. Using this software we talk about different proportions of prints and can click a + button to enlarge or a - button to make an image smaller. In this arrangement, the smallest prints are 8x12. The largest is a 20x30. Except for the one framed print, the prints are all mounted on 1/4" black material and then stand out from the wall an additional 1/2" for a three-dimensional look. The "E" in the middle is a light that completes this eye-catching arrangement.
