Several years ago when I put on a baggy sweater, one of my daughters suggested I try something a little more fitted. I was nervous to do so because ... well ... baggy clothes can hide a lot! I found comfort in that. Still do!
I sometimes follow my daughter's advice but still gravitate to loose clothing. I can totally empathize when many women want to do the same -- wear loose clothing -- when we plan for their headshot sessions.
Even though there's a lot of text here and just two photos, please hang in there and keep reading.
During pre-session consults with women I usually suggest that they bring at least one form-fitted top to wear, no matter what their body type is.
But I'll let you in on a little secret that I have permission to tell. During the last year two women who received that advice from me ended up bringing loose-fitted clothing. Nothing form-fitting.
I totally respect what people ultimately choose to be photographed in. They know their own stories. I do not.
But in the case of those two women, neither liked their photos in their loose-fitting clothing.
I was so glad when one of them changed into some form-fitting basics I already had on hand. Then she LOVED her photos. And got so many, MANY huge compliments on them.
The other was Sheryl who you see in this post. Sheryl exudes fun and caring. I photographed her one day in her loose-fitting clothing. We liked those photos but I encouraged her to come back for another session with leggings and a basic long-sleeved t-shirt from Gap. (I now have a whole size run of them for this very reason.)
We were both so glad she agreed to do so. Just looking at her photos I can see her caring and zest for life. She is SO FUN and reaches out to others in need. And, did I say she is SO FUN?!!!!! : )
For just knocking around I usually don't practice what I preach about wearing form-fitting clothing. But for a situation that warrants a little spiffing up, including a photo session, I usually do.
Your professional photographer should be well versed in bringing out your personality and accentuating your physical characteristics. By accentuating, I don't mean make you someone you aren't. I mean having the training, equipment, etc., to pose and light you so you look your best.
Your personality can shine no matter what you are wearing in a headshot session. And you need to feel good physically in what you are wearing. But if you typically gravitate to baggy, consider trying one option that is a little form-fitting. Trust me. : )
